According to our information, an avalanche occurred on Saturday at Pic Pédros in Porta (Pyrénées-Orientales). The Osséjà high-mountain gendarmerie unit reports that several people were caught up in the avalanche, which was 300 metres long and 100 metres wide.
The witnesses, who were presumably in a state of shock, were unable to say whether anyone else had been buried under the rubble. "In this large snowdrift, we are checking to make sure there is no one left there" explained to our colleagues at The Independent, Captain Espinasse, commander of the PGHM and rescue coordinator. “We have stepped up our efforts to deploy our forces before nightfall. Everyone in the group is present and accounted for; we are currently carrying out a headcount.”
