?? Greece in mourning: the search continues.

An “unspeakable tragedy”. Alexis Tsipras has declared three days of national mourning in Greece, and flags have been flown at half-mast until Friday. Greek firefighters, assisted by various countries, are searching for around 100 people who are missing. On Tuesday evening, the government had not released the number of people missing. The death toll from these fires in Greece could therefore exceed that of the fires which killed 77 people in 2007. Of a total of 187 people hospitalised, 82 were still receiving treatment on Tuesday evening, ten of whom were in a serious condition and 11 children whose condition was not a cause for concern. On Wednesday, firefighters continued to search for people trapped in burnt-out houses or cars near the seaside resorts of Mati and Rafina, east of Athens, which have been ravaged by the fires. According to the Greek government, the fires had mobilised more than 600 firefighters as early as 23 July, but the rapid spread of the flames, fuelled by temperatures approaching 40°C and winds reaching up to 100 km/h, prompted the government of Alexis Tsipras NASA has released a satellite image of Greece, taken on Tuesday, which starkly shows the fire sites in Mati, east of the capital, and Kineta, to the west.
