Officially announced this Thursday at the International Risk Management Exhibition in Nîmes, Europe’s first forest fire-fighting base is set to open shortly in France. It will have several roles: education, training, research and innovation to tackle this growing risk.
Seven countries have joined forces as part of this project, known as Nemausus. They are France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Croatia and Cyprus. According to our information, confirmed by official sources, it is due to be launched in early summer 2023 at Nîmes-Garons. This is an obvious choice, as it is already home to the French Civil Protection air base.
"This centre of expertise is involved in the run-up to fires, in terms of planning and training, on flight simulators for example. But it also plays a role afterwards, through the sharing of lessons learnt, to ensure that mistakes are not repeated, and to improve training and preparation for operations in European theatres of operations.", told our colleagues at Midi Libre, Adrien Mangiavillano, head of the aerospace sector at Nîmes Métropole.
