On Tuesday 27 February, a meeting to raise awareness of forest fire prevention took place at the village hall in Candas (in the Somme). Captain Gaëtan Veyrier and local authorities were present at the event. It is true that, of the thirteen municipalities Nine of the municipalities in the Muse et Raspes du Tarn inter-municipal community, including Montjaux (Aveyron), are located in areas at risk of forest fires. This meeting therefore provided an opportunity for a serious discussion on the subject.
Captain Gaëtan Veyrier of the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) from Rodez emphasised the importance of clearing undergrowth. This preventative measure falls within the legal framework of the departmental forest protection plan. Indeed, forest fires pose a considerable danger. Not only for biodiversity and ecosystems, but also for homes and people’s safety. The destruction of natural habitats, the loss of biodiversity and greenhouse gas emissions all contribute to climate change.
Campaign to prevent forest fires and protect local residents
Furthermore, fires can quickly threaten residential areas, putting residents’ lives and property at risk. The smoke produced affects air quality, posing risks to people’s respiratory health.
The evening’s event, held at the Candas village hall to encourage discussion and raise awareness, attracted around fifty participants. Among them were the mayor, local councillors and affected residents. Following a detailed presentation on the obligations regarding brush-clearing, a drinks reception provided an opportunity for everyone to chat informally. This initiative aims to raise collective awareness of the risk of forest fires, by highlighting the importance of preventive measures to protect the environment and ensure everyone’s safety.
