At around 4.50 pm on Monday, a fire broke out near the Mas de Saporta in Lattes, in the Hérault department. The flames destroyed between 200 and 300 square metres of scrubland. Thanks to the rapid response of the fire brigade, supported by the municipal and national police, the fire was quickly brought under control. No injuries were reported.

According to Metro, something unsettling caught the attention of the police: a man, standing alone, was watching the scene without showing any signs of panic. He seemed engrossed in the work of the emergency services. Intrigued by his behaviour, the police approached him.

Suspicious behaviour leading to a confession

The man, aged 31 and from Cournonterral, made no attempt to flee. When arrested, he readily admitted to having started the fire. No clear motive has been put forward, but his obvious interest in the work of the fire service could indicate a fascination with that world – a pattern often observed in some arsonists.

The individual, who has been taken into police custody, is to undergo a psychiatric assessment. This assessment will determine his mental state at the time of the offences and will guide the next steps in the legal proceedings. The case has reignited the debate on the prevention and management of arsonist behaviour.
