Whilst Forest Fires As it becomes one of the most downloaded apps in France, a crucial reminder is in order: the safety of the emergency services must never be compromised, particularly during periods of forest fires.

An essential but vulnerable aerial system

Firefighting relies on a complex system where each player plays a key role. Among them are the air assets – Canadair, Dash, water-bombing helicopters or reconnaissance aircraft – often form the last line of defence against flames threatening homes, infrastructure or human lives.

However, a danger remains, and this is causing concern amongst the emergency services: the presence of drones near incident sites. A video recently shared within the Feux de Forêt community is said to have been filmed using a drone flying over or near an ongoing operation.

A risk of collision with serious consequences

Rescue aircraft are on the move at very low altitude, sometimes just a few dozen metres from the terrain or vegetation. Under these conditions, a drone represents a dangerous obstacle, which may cause:

  • A collision with an engine, a propeller, a windscreen or a control surface;

  • Some major damage putting the crew at risk;

  • A suspension of flight operations, delaying water drops and complicating the work of firefighters on the ground.

« The consequences could be dire for crews already engaged in high-risk missions ", the authorities emphasise.

Collective responsibility and a clear rule

At Feux de Forêt, the editorial line is unambiguous: No images or videos taken by a drone during an ongoing operation will be broadcast. This rule, set out in the Terms and Conditions of Use, aims to protect those who risk their lives to save ours.

« Information must never be provided at the expense of safety ", the team points out.

A growing awareness

This message comes at a particular time: Feux de Forêt is now the first French-speaking community dedicated to monitoring fires, with a top-rated app 4th most downloaded app on the App Store in France, across all categories.

This success reflects a changing attitudes : The French are taking an increasing interest in natural hazards, prevention and the protection of their territory. This trust brings with it responsibilities, notably that of to encourage positive behaviour.

What should you do in the event of a fire?

If a fire breaks out near your home:

  • Please follow the instructions issued by the authorities ;

  • Keep your distance unnecessarily from the area;

  • Never let your drone take off, even several kilometres away from the scene of the incident;

  • Let the air assets get on with their work in complete safety;

  • Make sure you use official sources of information.

« Because when it comes to fighting fires, every second counts. And because behind every Canadair, there are people whose lives matter and who deserve to return home safely ", concludes the Feux de Forêt team.

Prevention saves forests. Vigilance saves lives.
