The south of France is facing a spate of wildfires this Wednesday, affecting in particular the departments of theAude, by theHérault and the Var. Weather conditions, characterised by strong winds and persistent heat, are hampering fire-fighting operations.
Current fires: an overview
- Fréjus (Var) : A fire was reported at around 4.15 pm. No fewer than 180 firefighters have been deployed to the scene, supported by three helicopters. The authorities have not yet provided any information on the extent of the damage.
- Sainte-Valière (Aude): A fire was spotted at 2.45 pm, producing a large plume of smoke. According to initial estimates, the flames have already swept across around 10 hectares.
- Oupia (Hérault): Another fire broke out at around 4 pm. The aerial resources deployed are impressive: 4 Canadair aircraft, 4 Dash-8 Milan aircraft, 3 helicopters and 1 BENGALE aircraft. According to InfOccitanie, between 15 and 20 hectares have been burnt. The fire is spreading and is now threatening the Aude department, as reported by L’Indépendant.
Adverse weather conditions
Firefighters and emergency services are having to contend with strong winds and high temperatures, two factors that are exacerbating the spread of the fires. These conditions are making operations particularly difficult and increasing the risk of the fires reigniting or spreading.
