A fire was still burning on Saturday morning in the Luglon area, in the Landes, has spread across nearly 1,580 hectares since it broke out on Thursday. The flames, which reignited at around 4.30 am, are spread across two distinct areas: the initial outbreak and a second area to the south-east of the village, caused by the fire spreading over a gap.
Nearly 550 firefighters are on the ground working to contain the spread of the fire, with the support of aerial resources which have resumed their sorties. Their efforts have so far prevented any homes from being affected, although the fire remains particularly active near the village of Garein.
Evacuations and road closures
Overnight, around a hundred people were evacuated from the western part of Garein, bringing the total number of evacuations since the fire began to 650. The authorities are asking those who have been evacuated not to attempt to return to their homes. Two reception centres have been opened: the Sabres village hall and the Landes Vertes estate. A medical and psychological emergency unit (CUMP) has also been set up in the village hall to support those affected.
Several roads remain closed to traffic, notably the RD 327 and RD 14, which are closed to the north and south of Luglon, as well as a section of the RD 834, with a diversion in place.
Weather conditions, characterised by falling temperatures and higher humidity, are expected to make the rescue efforts easier in the coming hours. Firefighters remain on alert to prevent the fire from reigniting, particularly in the most vulnerable areas.
