The fire that broke out in Payrin-Augmontel and Valdurenque, in the Tarn, has now been brought under control since last night. The flames have swept across nearly 600 hectares, but the fire is no longer spreading thanks to the large-scale response by the emergency services.
An exceptional mobilisation of the fire brigade
Up to 330 firefighters were deployed at the height of the operation, with 250 of them working through the night to bring the flames under control. Their efforts, combined with a drop in wind speed and a rise in humidity, helped to stabilise the situation. Teams remain on standby this morning to tackle any remaining hotspots and secure the entire perimeter.
Despite the extent of the damage, there were no casualties. In terms of property damage, two houses and two sheds were destroyed, whilst a few lightweight structures were damaged within the local military camp.
Guidance and return of evacuated populations
Due to the large-scale emergency response operation in the department, the Prefect of the Tarn has asked the organisers of the Montagne Noire Rally to cancel the events scheduled to take place in the Tarn. Further information regarding safety instructions and the possible return of the evacuated residents will be provided this morning.
